The Study of Δ Sct Stars in the Transition Era from Ground–based to Space Photometry

چکیده

The different research teams involved in the study of δ Sct stars have slightly changed their strategy in the past years. The observational effort to secure worldwide coverage of case studies is continued, but the specifications become more severe, especially about target characterization and frequency resolution. After the successful launch of the Canadian satellite MOST, which will be the pioneer of asteroseismology from space, the future missions are programmed to properly take into account the need of an adequate frequency resolution: COROT will spent 30 and 150 days (additional and core programs, respectively) on the target, while EDDINGTON will arrive up to 1 year. Such a requirement is a direct consequence of the observational results on δ Sct, γ Dor, SPB stars, ... obtained from ground. It should be noted that without these results (see Poretti 2000 for a review about δ Sct stars) the scientific background of the space missions would be much less defined and the risks of incomplete results (owing to inaccurate selection of targets, insufficient resolution, underestimate of the influence of the rotation) much higher.

Preparing the COROT space mission: incidence and characterisation of pulsation in the Lower Instability Strip⋆

By pursuing the goal to find new variables in the COROT field–of–view we characterised a sample of stars located in the lower part of the instability strip. Our sample is composed of stars belonging to the disk population in the solar neighbourhood. We found that 23% of the stars display multiperiodic light variability up to few mmag of amplitude, i.e., easily detectable in a single night of ph...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Key Aspects in the Photometric Monitoring of Δ Sct Stars

The MONS experiment will be able to verify some of the most important topics in the asteroseismologic studies of δ Sct stars. This research will benefit not only from the large increase in the number of detected frequencies, but also from the possibility to perform mode identification by means of very precise two–colour photometry. To do that, an appropriate frequency resolution, comparable to ...

Photometric Study of Variable Stars in the Open Cluster NGC

We report the discovery of 19 variable stars and two blue–stragglers in the field of the open cluster NGC 6866. Three of the variable stars we classify as δ Sct, two, as γ Dor, four, as W UMa, two, as ellipsoidal variables, and one, as an eclipsing binary. Seven stars show irregular variability. Two of the pulsators, a δ Sct star NGC 6866-29 and a γ Dor star NGC 6866-21, are multiperiodic. From...

Variable stars in the open cluster Mel 71

The UBVI and time-series CCD photometric observations of the intermediate-age open cluster Mel 71 were carried out to search for variable stars and obtain their physical parameters. By fitting the ZAMS to the observed color-color and color-magnitude diagrams, we estimated a reddening value of the cluster E(B−V) = 0.20 ± 0.05 and a distance modulus (V−M V) • = 11.6 ± 0.2. We also found its age o...
